I am so delighted to finally be able to write this post! Now that the NYX Awards are all done and dusted I can share some pictures and tell you all what I've been up to all summer!
I entered the NYX Face Awards back in May, at the time it seemed like just another random instagram competition so I thought I'd give it a shot, little did I know it would turn into the highlight of my career so far! To enter the initial round I recreated a look I did last year on the lovely Steph, this is definitely my "signature" look so it's the first thing that popped into my head when thinking about what to enter!
A few days after entering, I got a call from the lovely Irene to let me know that I was through to the Top 20! I was absolutely over the moon and couldn't wait to get cracking on the next round. With some help from the Mr and the wonderful staff at the Olivier Cornet gallery I filmed my Top 20 video in accordance with the "Quintessentially British" theme. Did I mention we also got a massive box filled with NYX goodies??
For this round I took inspiration from my favourite British graffiti artists and incorporated some of their iconic pieces into my final look. Trying to cram this entire look into 90 seconds was definitely the biggest challenge of the competition!
After all of that was done, I had an anxious few days waiting to find out if I'd made the Top 10. Getting that phonecall was honestly the most surreal few minutes of my life, I seriously wasn't expecting to get through after seeing all of the amazing Top 20 looks! The next round was a "Festival Beauty" theme. I wanted to steer clear of a typical music festival inspired look so I instead chose to base my look around the festival of Holi, and here's how it turned out! And yes, we also got ANOTHER huge box of NYX goodies!!
Next was the public vote. This was absolutely terrifying as I have next to no followers compared to some of the rest of the Top 10! With a lot of bullying and a lot of luck, I somehow managed to sneak my way into the Top 5! This was where things got really exciting. NYX flew me to London, showered me with goodies and provided us all with an amazing film crew to film our final video. The theme for the last round was "Freak Show" and each of the top 5 were given a different character to bring to life. I got given the creepy clown which I was absolutely delighted with! Here's how the final video turned out.
So the following week we were flown back to London again (feeling like an absolute celeb at this point) for the live final. The day of the final began with a tour of the YouTube creative space in London. This was SO amazing! It was great to meet and hang out with the rest of the top 5 and the YouTube team gave us some great advice on how to build our channels.
Afterwards we got taken out to a verrrrrry nice lunch with the team from L'Oreal and then back to our hotel to get ready! Later on that evening we all headed back to the Ham Yard hotel for the live final. The final was so surreal and overwhelming : there were so many people there just to see us!! The show was hosted by Sarah Jane Crawford and was a short interview with each of the Top 5 and then the screening of out videos.
And the winner was... the amazing Emily Clayton!!! I'm so so happy for Emily, she's an incredible artist as well as a beautiful and extremely kind person. Afterwards we all stuck around for the afterparty had a great time! So that is it! I know this post is about ten years long but honestly it could have been ten times as long if I thought people wouldn't get bored reading it! Overall the competition was so so amazing and I enjoyed every second of it! Big congrats to Emily and to Anna Lingis, Maria Malone and Fernanda Machado too, it was such a lovely group to get to spend the few days with! I'll leave you with a few snaps from the after party. x
